The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
