Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
