TikTok Grants Users Control to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service revealed that it now features more than 1 billion content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This development comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to give people the option to see more or less of that, according to their own preferences,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. In total, more than 100 million media items are submitted to the platform each day, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they view by opening the content preference feature in the app and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the setting cover news, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

Its rules mandate users to label convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids harmful deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will from now on apply an artificially created tag to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from seeking to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m educational fund for specialists and institutions to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will support educational bodies specializing in teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its safety measures, amid debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is set to reduce a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts voicing alarm that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead stated that human moderation would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by people. The platform announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
